This Czech film explores the relationship between a local man who is asked by the Nazis to take over a button shop run by an old Jewish woman. They become friends and help each other. But then the man is told by the Nazis that he must send the old woman away with all of the other Jews in the town. It is powerful film filled with the impact of human relationships that overcome politics and hate, and the moral questions that manifest around those relationships.
This film won an academy award in 1965 for the Best Foreign Language Film.
