RESOURCES, ORGANIZATIONS AND ACTIONS FOR SOCIAL ACTION, SOCIAL JUSTICE, and TIKUN OLAM

Internal/Affiliates to BSS

  1. SAC-Social Action Committee: developing a list of Mitzvah projects for the B’nai Mitzvah students; Working on Good Deeds Day, focusing on a project to help immigrants. Good Deeds Day is April 6, and there are many ways to involve students and adults in activities.
  2. EICI-Equity, Inclusion, and Community Initiative: A BSS-wide initiative to infuse these principles throughout all committee work.
  3. BUILD-Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development: They are working on the vacant housing problem in Baltimore City and the transportation safety issue for Poly and Western students. www.buildiaf.org
  4. IC4BL-Interfaith Coalition 4 Black Lives: holds monthly rallies to support Black Lives. Recently voted to include Immigrants in the mission. www.IC4BL.org

Community- local and Statewide

  1. JUFJ- Jews United for Justice: working with the Fair Share Act for MD coalition. Legislation to make the wealthiest and corporations pay their fair share of taxes. It also works on youth and economic justice issues. HB1014/SB859. www.jufj.org
  2. Strong Schools MD- The BLUEPRINT: working to keep State funding at a level to support the BLUEPRINT. Many bills are pending statewide. www.strongschoolsmaryland.org
  3. AWE-Asylee Women Enterprise: supports forced migrants, asylum seekers, and trafficking survivors. Congregant Dr. Shari Kim recently spoke to BSS about trafficking. www.asyleewomen.org
  4. Be the Change BMore: Connects people with opportunities to lobby, phone bank, and write letters. Working on Fair Share Act for MD. www.bethechangebmore.org
  5. Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake: This organization works on environmental justice and supports the Maryland Bottle Bill, HB232/SB346. www.interfaithchesapeake.org/
  6. SURJ Baltimore- Show Up for Racial Justice: part of a national group of white people working to undermine white supremacy and work towards racial justice. Works on legislation. www.surjbaltimore.org

National

  1. RAC- Religious Action Center: bringing Jewish values to social justice issues. Supports federal legislation and takes positions on important issues. www.rac.org
  2. ACLU-American Civil Liberties Union: civil rights organization that defends all people. Supporting voting rights, LGBTQ equality, reproductive freedom, and free speech. www.aclu.org
